Safety Procedures at Rochester Public Schools: What Families Need to Know

Rochester Public Schools utilizes the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to manage safety and emergency situations within our school buildings. The SRP provides a consistent, clear language for students, staff, and first responders to use during an incident.

Notification Methods

In the event of an emergency, parents and caregivers will be notified through the following channels:

  • Emergency Alerts: Email, phone calls, and text messages.

  • Websites: Official School and District websites.

  • RPS App: Push notifications sent directly to your device.

  • Social Media: Real-time updates on RPS Facebook and Instagram pages.

Important: If you have opted out of district mailing lists, you will not receive direct alerts and must rely on our app, website, or social media for information.

Emergency Actions

The SRP is built around five core actions. Each action is triggered by a specific term and followed by a directive for everyone in the building.

What to Expect

HOLD

"In your room or area"

Hallways are kept clear. Students and staff remain in their rooms and continue "business as usual" until an "All Clear" is announced.

SECURE

"Get inside. Lock outside doors"

Used when there is a threat outside the building. Everyone returns inside, exterior doors are locked, and situational awareness is increased while learning continues.

LOCKDOWN

"Locks, lights, out of sight"

Used for a threat inside the building. Classroom doors are locked, lights are turned off, and everyone remains silent and out of sight. No one opens the door for any reason.

EVACUATE

"To a [location]"

Moving occupants from one location to another. Students leave belongings behind (except phones if possible) and follow instructions to a safe assembly point.

SHELTER

Depends on the hazard

Used for environmental hazards (e.g., tornado, hazmat). Strategies include "Drop, cover, and hold" or "Seal the room" as appropriate.

Drills and Training

RPS conducts five mandated drills annually to ensure everyone is prepared for different scenarios. These drills cover Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter protocols. Please note that RPS does not conduct active-shooter simulations.

Before a lockdown drill, school principals will send information home. Parents have the option to opt their students out of these specific drills. For more information, please contact your school's principal.
